Family physicians specialize in the care of adults and children. After four years of medical school family physicians usually spend at least another three years in training. The family medicine specialists at SMBP also have passed the Board Certification of the American Board of Family Medicine. In the “old days” general medical doctors were often called “gp's” or “general practitioners.” While the image of Marcus Welby M.D. or those doctors portrayed by Norman Rockwell on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post still apply, the specialty of Family Medicine has evolved and now includes extensive training in internal medicine, pediatrics, women's health, geriatrics, psychiatry, dermatology, orthopedics and emergency medicine. |
